Seven Simple Steps to Prevent Identity Theft at Home
Imagine someone assuming your identity without you even knowing. It’s called identity theft and according to the Federal Trade Commission, it’s the fastest growing crime in the United States.
Just this month, a 36-year-old Boston man was arrested for allegedly using stolen identities in multiple schemes- including the purchase of high end electronics, and using an illegal credit card encoder to make fake credit cards. Tens of thousands of dollars were stolen.
Watch the video below as we outline seven simple steps to prevent identity theft at home so YOU don’t become a victim:
Here are the seven simple steps to help prevent identity theft outlined in the video above:
- Shred important documents that include account information, passwords and personal facts.
- Pick up your mail daily to avoid overfilling your mailbox, which invites intruders.
- Don’t give out your social security number to anyone unless you verify who they are and why they need it.
- When using your computer, create hard to break passwords to computer and accounts and don’t use the same password for every site.
- Check your financial statements online — and often! Look for any fraudulent activity and report it immediately.
- Beware of phishing and clicking links in unsolicited emails – even if the email looks like it comes from one of your accounts.
- Finally, protect your credit by checking your report yearly, and applying for a security freeze, so your credit information can’t be released without your consent.
Keep in mind, identity thieves are resourceful; once they have your personal information, they can steal your money, get medical treatments using your health insurance, even claim your tax refund!
