As a parent, we try to keep our kids as safe as possible. When we’re with them, we hold their hands and tell them to look both ways when they cross the street. But what happens when your child goes to school?

Here are 5 back to school tips to help keep your child safe, when you’re not there to protect them.

Tip #1

Make sure your child knows the home phone number, work numbers and important cell phone numbers. If they don’t have a cell phone, consider a calling card so they can always get in touch with you, if needed.

Tip #2

Plan a walking route to the school or bus route with the least amount of traffic and intersections. If there aren’t sidewalks, teach your child to walk on the left side, facing traffic. And avoid cell phones, hand-held games or devices with earbuds, so they can hear nearby traffic.

Tip #3

Teach your children to be aware of their personal rights, so they aren’t afraid to speak out if being bullied. If they feel uncomfortable in any way, tell them to go to the principal’s office, so they can talk to an adult immediately.

Tip #4

Explain to your child what to do in an emergency. Teach them how and when to call 911. If old enough, take a first aid or CPR course with them.

Tip #5

If your child is home alone after school, make sure they understand the security measures you’ve taken to ensure their safety, such as additional locks, motion lights and home security systems. Tell them to keep an eye-out for suspicious activity such as a broken window or ripped screen—and explain what to do if a stranger comes to the door.

Giving your child safety tips is great—but you’re probably still going to worry the minute they walk out that door. Keep them safe by staying active and involved in their daily lives. Know their routine and ask questions so you’ll know when something isn’t quite right—and you can continue to protect them whenever possible.
