Manchester, also known as Manchester-by-the-Sea, was first settled in 1629, and just over fifteen years later it became incorporated as a town. The town was originally named “Jeffrey’s Creek,” however in 1800, after many residents of New England and “Jeffrey’s Creek” descended from Manchester, England, the name was changed to Manchester.
Prior to European settlers, a tribe of Agawam natives lived in the area under the leadership of Chief Masconomo who sold parcels of land to colonists. As settlers arrived, like many other native populations, the numbers greatly decreased. After being settled in 1629, Manchester-by-the-Sea flourished predominantly as a fishing community.
Through the nineteenth century, the fishing industry remained at the forefront, until it turned a page and became a summer vacation haven for wealthy residents of New England. Today, it maintains a strong vacation home presence with new homes to compliment the historic homes in town. The beaches, fishing and other marine attractions make this a strong cultural town of New England.

Often times people think of a home security and fire alarm system as serving its purpose by protecting the property when the residents aren’t home, or when they are fast asleep. But on one occasion, for an American Alarm customer in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, the fire alarm system saved the day while they were having dinner.
Fire Alarm System Saves Family And Guests During Party
The family was hosting guests for a weekend party and had just sat down to eat when the fire alarm sounded. There was smoke in the basement. The homeowner quickly responded with a hand-held fire extinguisher and put down the flames. Or so it seemed. It turned out the fire continued to smolder, undetected by the family which returned to the dinner table. But the American Alarm system detected the growing danger. Always at the ready, a dispatcher at American Alarm’s 24-hour command center had the fire department on the way in time to save the home.
