Europeans first set up a permanent settlement in Gloucester in 1623, which included the land of what is now Rockport. Rockport seceded from Gloucester in 1840 and became incorporated that same year and was named Rockport. The name stems from the rocky shores of the area which was combined with port because it was a fishing port.
Rockport is unique in that the town is settled on a peninsula, which was an ideal location for the original native tribes who lived in the area. Prior to European arrival the area was thickly settled by native Agawam tribes. The first Europeans to come on the shores were Samuel de Champlain and his company of men, who named the area “Cap Aux Isles,” meaning Cape to isles.
The original settlements in Gloucester left nearby Rockport fairly empty. For the first century of the settlement, Rockport was predominantly used for lumber. After a port was built in the mid eighteenth century, the industry in town took off, bringing in new settlers. With the emergence of the fishing industry in town, the discovery of fine granite in town led to development of granite quarries. While Gloucester continued to develop exponentially into an urbanized area, Rockport remained much more tame, leading to the split in the towns and the incorporation of Rockport.
When the Industrial Revolution struck Massachusetts, Rockport also felt the effects and it became a bustling trade center for fishing and granite; the two industries in town that had previously existed burst into an international trading business.
Today, with a population of around 7,000, Rockport has become a historic and tourist town with numbers that greatly increase during summer months. The beaches, maritime history and local attractions make this a popular town.

It is considered the “Most often painted building in America.” It is recognized by the worn red paint and buoys that cover the side of the building. The beaches in town are also very popular with six beaches in town. A few years ago a woman who resides alone in her Rockport home was looking out her window when she noticed a man pull up the driveway and step out of his car. The heavy-set man was man dressed poorly and there was something about him the homeowner did not trust. Shortly after arriving, the man noticed the homeowner spotted him in the driveway, he quickly fled with his car. Although on the edge of panic, the homeowner had the presence of mind to call the Rockport police. The police responded and issued an alert. After some investigation the police determined the man had broken in to several houses in the area including one of the homeowner’s neighbors. Police several towns away finally caught the man and arrested him after a violent struggle.
Shortly after the incident the women contacted American Alarm and made an appointment for a home security system evaluation. Our expert staff surveyed the home, designed and installed a home security system that made the homeowner feel safe again. One additional safety feature included in the home security system is a panic button that triggers the alarm system even if the burglar alarm is not turned on.
