After being settled as part of Charlestown in 1630, it was named ‘Mistick,’ after the Mystic river which runs through the town. In 1634, the name was changed to “Meadford,” this was a testament to the river combining the words ‘meadow’ and ‘ford,’ which was eventually shortened to Medford upon its incorporation in 1892.
After being founded in 1630, Medford became the fourth oldest settlement in the country. This settlement was best known for agriculture in town, which was complemented by the fast flowing Mystic River. The local economy was benefitted by a bridge that stretched across the Mystic and opened trade routes to Boston and surrounding towns. The traffic through town and the river brought new industries and manufacturers allowing for Medford to secede from Charlestown and become incorporated as its own town.
By the time of the incorporation, among the various industries in town were brick, rum, ship and tile manufacturers. These manufacturers brought new opportunities for many, and the populations increased rapidly; in 1800 the population was around 1,000 people the rapid growth saw 17,000 new residents come to Medford by 1900.
