According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Newton was ranked 194th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 186th in 2012. However, it was 178th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 212th in 2012.

Newton was settled in 1630, under the name “the newe towne,” which later became Cambridge. After seceding from Cambridge in 1688 the newly formed town was named “Cambridge Village.” Over the course of the years it went through a couple more name changes. Three years after its incorporation, in 1691 it was renamed “Newtown” and in 1766 it became “Newton,” which eventually became a city in 1873.
After first settling in 1630, colonists and natives lived in neighboring lands. John Elliott a Reverend in nearby Roxbury, was a missionary who tried to convert natives to the Puritan religion. In 1651, he urged natives living in Newton to move to Natick so that there wouldn’t be conflict between the two sides.
With the natives out of the way, residents of Newton began to industrialize the town. Among the structures created were the plethora of mills built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some of the products that were produced were glue, paper and chocolate. This industry led to a larger amount of infrastructure in the town. In the 1830’s the Boston and Albany Railroad was developed and made one of its stops in Newton. Being one of the first railroads in the country, many citizens were attracted to Newton as a residential town because of ease of travel and the farmland in the town. These reasons are the driving forces for the town to become one of the first commuter suburbs in the country.
Newton is now best known for being the heart of the Boston Marathon, widely regarded as one of the hardest marathon races in the world. The four Newton Hills make up a middle portion of the race, the last of which is called the “Heartbreak Hill.” Newton is also known for its abundance of schools, both public and private. Newton is home to 23 preschools, 21 public elementary through high schools, 8 private schools, and 6 universities and colleges.
Among the recreation spots Newton is noted for are the parks, the most popular ones are Chestnut Hill Reservoir and Crystal Lake. Both serve as trail systems for walking and jogging, while sporting views of the Boston skyline and nature. Another popular location in Newton is Newton Centre. Newton Centre one of thirteen villages in the town and is a downtown which consists of many upscale restaurants, stores and gardens.
Louis C.K. is a famous comedian who spent his grade school years in Newton and attended Newton North High School until he graduated in 1985. He graduated with Matt LeBlanc, famous for playing Joey in the hit comedy Friends and the famous Jazz trombone player Josh Roseman.
Jim Davis is the former CEO and current chairman for the New Balance shoe company. When he purchased the company in 1972, only six workers were with the company; since that time the company has expanded rapidly and now employs nearly 4,000 people. Ne Balance is among the largest athletic shoe brands in the world.
David Ortiz also known as “Big Papi,” currently resides in Newton with his wife Tiffany and their three children. Over the course of his career, Ortiz has been named to nine All-Star teams, and holds the records for most Home Runs, Runs Batted In, and hits for a Designated Hitter, while helping to bring two championships to Boston.
Matt Damon is an actor who was born in Cambridge but grew up splitting time between Cambridge and Newton. Damon has starred in movies like Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, The Departed, and the Ocean’s Trilogy (Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen). He also recently started a production company with longtime friend, Ben Affleck.

A client in Newton with a very large home (11,000 Sq Ft), needed a monitored fire alarm system installed per a mandatory Insurance requirement. They had just completed a major renovation in which 47 hard wired smoke detectors had been installed to meet the required building codes. The problem was that 110 volt Smoke detectors installed by the electrician for the fire alarm system could not be altered to be monitored by an alarm company and would have to be rewired and replaced with low voltage, photo electric smoke detectors.
Chubb insurance, having worked and consulted with American Alarm for over ten years recommended our company to this client. After much deliberation they contracted AACI for this seemingly impossible and undesirable task. The anxiety of undergoing more house surgery after a year of renovations and the fear of potentially damaging the work they had just completed was replaced with a fire alarm installation that was well done.
