According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Wakefield was ranked 149th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 159th in 2012. It was 166th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 176th in 2012.

First settled as part of Lynn Village in 1638, after six years it became part of Reading. As Reading expanded the need to establish different towns within was apparent, and in 1812 present day Wakefield was established as South Reading. In 1856 the town changed its name to Wakefield as a tribute to Cyrus Wakefield.
After it was originally settled, the area of Wakefield was best known for its agriculture and surplus of wildlife. Farmers flourished as the soil proved to be nutrient-rich and the land was home to a wealth of pigeons and turkeys. Along with agriculture, mills located along the Mill River helped support the economy; these mills included corn mills and sawmills.
Wakefield’s industry remained fairly quiet until the nineteenth century, until the railroad came to Wakefield. The original railroad ran from Boston to Wilmington, but soon an additional length was added that would extend it to Maine, thus forming the Boston and Maine Railroad. This allowed more business to come through town, and the population boomed; in fifteen years the population doubled. Among the largest and most famous business were the Boston Ice Company, which would cut ice from Quannapowitt, and the Wakefield Rattan Company.
Today although there are businesses in the town, Wakefield is best known as a commuter suburb, with excellent school systems and an active community.
The biggest attraction in the summer months in Wakefield is Lake Quannapowitt. Lake Quannapowitt allows locals to enjoy activities such as boating, fishing and scenic views while jogging or running in the local races held on the surrounding foot path. Wakefield was also once home to the famous Pleasure Island. While only in operation from 1959-1969, it was dubbed as “Disneyland of the Northeast,” and sported guests such as the three stooges, Michael Landon and Cesar Romero.
Scott Brown was born in Kittery, Maine, however, he was raised in Wakefield, where he would later attend and graduate from Wakefield High School in 1977. Following High School he would attend Tufts University and later Boston College Law School. Eventually he went on to become the Massachusetts State Senator for three years until 2013. Brown is no longer directly involved in politics, but he says he is open to a possible return.
Joe Cannata was born and raised in Wakefield although he attended High School in nearby Boston where he went to Boston College High School. After graduating High School he went to Merrimack College where he would become a star goaltender for the hockey team, and was drafted after his Freshman year by the Vancouver Canucks. He most recently played for Vancouver’s farm league team the Chicago Wolves.
John A. Volpe was born and raised in Wakefield, where he would also attend Wakefield High School, before going on to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology. Volpe would work his way up to becoming the Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Works, and in 1956 he became the administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, after President Dwight Eisenhower appointed him. He would later serve as the Governor of Massachusetts on two separate occasions, becoming the sixty-first and sixty-third Governor.
A referral from a long-standing friend of American Alarm led us recently to work with a customer who was planning to purchase a new townhouse condominium in Wakefield. Even though the townhouse was not yet built, it was the right time to start thinking about security because we often work with builders during the construction phase to aid in the design and installation protocols for home security systems.
