First settled by European colonist in 1630, the area was first incorporated as a city in 1846, under the name Roxbury. Five years later, in 1851, the area seceded and incorporated as West Roxbury due to the geographic location of the town relative to Roxbury. In 1874, it was dissolved and became a neighborhood of Boston, which it remains to this day.
Like most of Boston, the area was first settled by European colonists in the 1630’s, however, this area was much less for industrial use than surrounding places. The original settlement was primarily an agrarian community in its early existence. The slow development of this neighborhood of Boston is still apparent to this day, as it is often referred to as a “suburb within the city.” Today, the neighborhood of West Roxbury is home to over 30,000 people, and while many neighboring parts of Boston remain heavily industrialized, West Roxbury is a mostly residential area filled with tree-line blocks of homes. The many neighborhoods of Boston make it easy for residents to commute to and from West Roxbury.
Among the notable sites and attractions in town are the historic Brook Farm and the annual 5K Road Race. Brook Farm was a set up as a self-sustaining utopian community that was established in 1841 by George Ripley, a transcendentalist minister who had abandoned his religious beliefs in order to create this community. In this community, all residents could choose an occupation, all were paid the same amount, and all were given ample leisure time. Though the community only lasted until 1847, it had a lasting effect on the area and accounts of life on the farm can still be read in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Blithedale Romance. As far as current attractions in town, the Corrib Classic is a five kilometer road race that take place annually in June. After the first race took place in 1994, the event has grown to include over 2,000 runners and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local causes.
Anthony Michael Hall is best known for his work as an actor during the 1980’s where he starred in teen-oriented types of movies. Born in West Roxbury in 1968, Hall bounced around the East and West coast during his youth before eventually living in New York City with his mother who was also an entertainer. Hall’s acting career began at age seven when he would act in commercials for products such as Honeycomb cereal and Bounty paper towels. His first major role came in 1983, when he would star in National Lampoon’s Vacation. Since then he has starred in movies such as The Breakfast Club, Edward Scissorhands, Six Degrees of Separation, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science.
Chris Nilan was born and raised in Boston where he would play hockey and idolize Boston Bruin greats like Bobby Orr. After a successful high school hockey career, he went on to play at the collegiate level, playing for Northeastern University. After being drafted 231st overall in the 1978 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadians, Nilan began his fifteen year career, during which he was known as a fighter, earning the nickname “Knuckles.” Over the course of his career,
Rich Cronin is best known for his time with the band Lyte Funkie Ones (LFO), for which he was the lead singer and songwriter from 1995-2002. Although Cronin was born in west Roxbury, he grew up in Kingston, where he would attend Sacred Heart High School. After graduating, he formed LFO which became one of the well-known boy bands of the 90’s and 2000’s touring with the likes of Britney Spears and *NSYNC.

Though a vital part of the city of Boston, the neighborhood of West Roxbury feels more like a suburb. The tree-lined streets and blocks of single family homes have long been a desirable and safe area for families of all ages.
But even in such pleasant surroundings, there can be many reasons to install a home security system. For a recent customer of ours in West Roxbury, a troublesome neighbor was the catalyst. Our customer lives alone and had become concerned for her safety and the safety of her property because of an increasingly rowdy and belligerent neighbor. The home security system we installed, complete with intrusion detection and a panic button to summon help, has allowed our customer to remain comfortable and secure in her home.
