Needham was first settled in 1680 after being purchased from Chief Nehoiden, but wasn’t incorporated until 1711. Named after Needham Market, England, after seceding from the neighboring town Dedham.
Upon it’s incorporation in 1711, Needham was known primarily for its farming and related industries such as lumbering and grazing for animals. The Charles River bordered the town and provided soil for their crops, as well as the opportunity for mills in the town; both saw and grist mills were built along the river.
The proximity to Boston allowed for further expansion and industrialization. People from England started to vacate their homes in search of a better opportunity in America. Many of these immigrants were knitters and they brought over their skills and business to Needham which translated very well for the cold winters. One of the original companies, the William Carter Company still produces goods today.
Needham is also known for its involvement with recreating the Boston Peninsula. Starting in 1857 Boston started bringing in land to fill in the area of the old Peninsula which had eroded over time. By the completion of the project, it was double its original size. Today due to its proximity to Boston, it serves as one of the more popular commuter towns in the Greater Boston area.
Aly Raisman is an Olympic gymnast who was born and raised in Needham. She competed in her first Olympic games in 2012 and won two Gold medals and a Bronze. She most recently competed on the TV show Dancing With the Stars.
Derek Sanderson is a former Boston Bruins legend who spent seven years playing for the team. During his career he was known as being a charismatic forward, who was never afraid to drop his gloves and fight. He now lives in Needham and works with other professional athletes and helps them to make sound financial decisions.
Charles D. Baker was born and raised in Needham before attending Harvard University where he graduated from in 1979. Since then he has been the CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for ten years, and has run for Governor in 2010 with plans to run again in 2014.

A customer was building a large home in Needham. To meet policy requirements the homeowner’s insurance company required the owner to have a 24-hour on-site Guard service or remote video monitoring. These requirements had to be met while the home was being constructed. Upon completion of the residence a monitored home security and fire alarm system (to code) were required. The homeowner inquired with several home security companies; all said these monitoring requirements could not be met.
The customer contacted his insurance company and was referred to American Alarm.
Our staff was able install a home security system with the mandatory monitoring features in a timely manner. The homeowner was extremely satisfied with the installation. If the customer had not called American Alarm the insurance policy would have been cancelled, the contractor would have lost credibility and the insurance company would have lost a lucrative client.
As a result of a 10 year relationship with Chubb Insurance, American Alarm has risen to the ultimate level of confidence. As of September 2005, American Alarm will become Chubb’s preferred burglar alarm and fire alarm vendor.
