The area that is now Westwood was first settled in 1640 as part of Dedham, then known as West Dedham. In 1897, it seceded becoming the last town to split from Dedham and became Westwood. From the time it was first settled by European colonists, Westwood has almost always been an agrarian community and until recently had little industrial development. Since the 1950’s, the town has witnessed a serious growing spurt and has tripled in population. Today there are over 200 businesses in town, although it is still partially rural. Apart from the industry, Westwood is known for its excellent academics, for which it routinely is among the best in the state making it an extremely desirable town, which in 2005 ranked thirteenth on the “Best Places to Live” in the United States by Money Magazine.
Restaurants:
Among the various sites in town are Hale Reservation and the remains of a famous historical cave. The Hale Reservation is best known for the outdoor recreation it provides for locals. Set on over 1,200 acres, locals come here for the plethora of outdoor activities the town has to offer. The Hale Reservation is home to three ponds, two of which have beaches and many trails that run through the area. Among the common activities are biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, horse-back riding, ice skating and swimming. The other recognized site in town is a cave known as “Oven’s Mouth.” This cave once protected King Philip and his soldiers during King Philip’s War when they were hiding from colonist forces.
Milt Schmidt is best known for his NHL career that spanned sixteen seasons all of which he spent playing for the Boston Bruins. Schmidt was born and raised in Canada and spent much of his youth in Toronto where he would excel in hockey. After playing at the Juniors level he was called up to play in 1937, after which he never looked back. Over the course of his career, he would amass 575 points in 776 games and was elected to the NHL Hall of Fame in 1961 and is a current resident of Westwood.
Kenny Florian is a retired Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter who grew up in Dover, although being born in Westwood. He attended Dover- Sherborn Regional High School and graduated in 1994 as a standout soccer player which he continued in college, playing for Boston College. After college he turned to Mixed Martial Arts where he would go on to have a successful career finishing his career with fourteen wins and only six losses, and he is also the only fighter from the UFC to fight in four weight divisions.
Dicky Barrett is best known as being the lead singer of the band Mighty Mighty Bosstones and as the announcer for Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Although born in Providence, Rhode Island, Barrett would attend school in nearby Norwood and Westwood, before meeting the drummer for the Mighty Mighty Bosstones while at college, forming the band in 1983. They have since become a platinum selling artist after their 1997 album “Let’s Face It.”
