Clinton was first settled as a part of the present day neighboring town under the name “Nashaway,” the name of the local tribe that previously inhabited the area. In 1850, the town of Clinton seceded from Lancaster, and was named after the DeWitt Clinton Hotel which was the favorite hotel of the founder of the town, Erastus Brigham Bigelow.
The Nashaway natives thrived in the area that is now the town of Clinton due to the abundance of resources nearby. Settled on the Nashua River and the Wachusett Reservoir, the natives had rich soil for agriculture and a wealth of fish from the fast flowing river. After European settlers arrived and created a settlement in the area, they too took advantage of the river, through the use of mills which were mostly for paper manufacturing.
Through the mills, the town saw a rise in industry and railroads came to town, including the Boston and Maine Railroad, the Old Colony Railroad and the Central Massachusetts Railroad. These railroads brought new business through to the town including the Bigelow brothers, Erastus and Horatio. The brothers brought a new industry to town and helped establish Clinton during the Industrial Revolution. Erastus was an inventive genius who is credited with the invention of a manufacturing power loom which was used for the production of carpets. With Erastus working as the more technical guy, and Horatio working the business side of the business, soon the brothers made a name for themselves, with the opening of the Lancaster Quilt Company, and the Bigelow Carpet Company. The brothers created such a market that the people no longer needed support from Lancaster so the town of Clinton was formed. Today, Clinton serves as a suburb to Worcester.
