Prior to European settlers coming to the area, it was settled by the Nipmuc native tribe. These natives thrived in the area as the Nashua River provided them with fertile soil for produce such as beans, corn, squash and tobacco. As settlers arrived in the area, the native population began to decline leaving the two sides with a strained relationship. Then King Philip’s War came, and battles struck the area and many members of both sides fled the area.
As settlers began to return to the land a pact was signed between the sides agreeing to the sale of a parcel of land that would become Leominster. After the agreement, settlers flooded the area and it became incorporated. While Leominster began as a farming town, the main industry shifted and became a manufacturing town and shortly after the introduction of manufacturing to Leominster, the railroad came to town, opening new trade routes to outside locations. The most prominent product produced in the town was the comb, and Leominster even earned the nickname “Comb City.”
Today, Leominster is the second largest city in Worcester County, only behind Worcester. With a population over 40,000, the city is no longer the manufacturing town that it once was, and it has become a more suburban city.
