According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Northbridge was ranked 71st in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 34th in 2012. It was 43rd for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 40th in 2012.

Originally settled by colonists in 1704, it wasn’t long before the town was incorporated, which came in 1772. The town was originally settled as a part of Mendon, and later Uxbridge until it seceded and formed Northbridge.
Prior to being settled by colonists, Northbridge was settled by Nipmuc native tribes. The three water sources running through town helped develop the native tribe into a flourishing community. In 1667, the Mendon Grant was signed and included the area of Northbridge.
The early settlement was largely an agrarian community, as the nutrient rich soil and nearby water sources provided a great source of food for early settlers, much like it had for the natives. The land remained predominantly used for agriculture up until the nineteenth century when the Industrial revolution hit, making the Blackstone River Valley one of the most profitable industrial areas in the country, and manufacturing and mill companies came to town. The most notable was Whitin Machine Works. The company was founded in 1831, and remained open well into the twentieth century, closing in 1976.
Today, Northbridge is a historic town with a population of over 15,000. Although the numerous mills and factories are not home to the same companies they once were, a new wave of companies occupying the old mills help keep the memories of the town’s past alive.

The Blackstone River Valley heritage Corridor consists of twenty-four towns, Northbridge included and is best known for its industry in the development of New England. Among the twenty-four towns, and over 10,000 historic sites, the neighborhood Whitinsville in town is home to the Whitin Machine Works, locally known as “The Shop.”
Steve Spagnuolo is best known as an NFL coach and current Defensive Coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Spagnuolo was born in Northbridge, although he moved to neighboring Grafton where he would attend Grafton High school before attending Springfield College where he played Wide Receiver on the football team. After graduating from school he pursued a career as an NFL coach. Working his way up from the college level, he became an NFL coach in 1999 for the Philadelphia Eagles. Since this time he has worked as a coach for four other NFL teams and was the Head Coach of the St. Louis Rams.
James Whitin was the son of Paul C. Whitin, who was the founder of Whitin Machine Works. Under Whitin’s control, the company would become one of the world’s largest textile machinery manufacturers. As a testament to the dramatic effect the company had on the town, Northbridge named one of its neighborhood’s Whitinsville after the Whitin family.
Glenn Adams is a retired MLB baseball player who spent his eight year career playing for three teams, the San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays. Adams was born and raised in Northbridge, where he would attend school before attending Springfield College playing baseball. In 1968, he was drafted forth overall by the Houston Astros. After first entering the league in 1975, he played until 1982.

In the Whitinsville section of Northbridge, we recently worked with a family that had moved into one of the many new subdivisions being built in the region.
Burglar Alarm System Protects Northbridge Family After Spike In Burglary
The family’s new home was their dream come true. What they didn’t expect, however, was that burglars were also attracted to the leafy streets of Whitinsville. There were seven housebreaks in our customer’s neighborhood in a year, which prompted them to call on American Alarm to install a full home security system. Since then, our 24-hour Security Command Center has kept watch over their home, and the would-be burglars have been deterred from trying to break in.
