After Europeans first settled in 1686, growth was slow in the settlement. In 1713, the town of Rutland was created, and was named after Rutland, England, a county located near the center of the country.
Prior to European settlers, the area that Rutland now lies in was settled by natives who flourished in the area. In 1686, a parcel of land containing Rutland was sold to settlers from previously established settlements. The settlement was slow to form due to resentment from the natives in the area, a trend that continued through the next decade. In 1719, native’s began attack European settlements in Father Rale’s War, also known as Dummer’s War with the last attack coming in 1724.
After the War, the town began anew, and became a mainly agrarian economy. The first industries were agriculture and mills. As the nineteenth century came, there were many mills located along Mill Brook, the first of which was built in 1719, as well as manufacturers that produced goods such as furniture, clothing and leather.
Today, Rutland is best known as the geographical center of Massachusetts. With a population of over 7,000, it has become a bedroom community, with many residents working in nearby Worcester or other larger communities.

Due to the rural nature in town, Rutland’s recreation is mainly based around the outdoors. The two major points of interest in town are trail systems the Rail Trail and the Midstate Trail. Both of them run through town, but the Midstate Trail is the longer, more established trail. The Midstate Trail runs from the Rhode Island border all the way through the state and connects to the Wapack Trail in New Hampshire, stopping in Rutland along the way. Other recreation not involving the nature in town is the Fouirth of July celebration in town. The four day event includes music performances, food stands, a parade and the highly praised firework show.
