After first being settled in 1722, after only five years, the town of Shrewsbury was incorporated and named after the town of the same name in England.
Shrewsbury is distinctive among many towns in Massachusetts, in that its early industry wasn’t centered around farming or mills. The terrain consists of many hills and streams which isn’t ideal for either industry.
Grants for the town were made in 1664 for over 3,000 acres of land, but it wasn’t settled until 1722. To make up for the lack of farming, colonist used apple orchards as the main source of agriculture. In 1750, Shrewsbury was home to two stores and four taverns. The end of the eighteenth century saw the emergence of new industries such as tanneries that would produce boots and shoes as well as gun smithing factories.
As surrounding areas became more populated, streetcar systems came to the area and made their way into Shrewsbury. This allowed it to become a commuter suburb to Worcester. Present day Shrewsbury is known as a suburb near Worcester that is one of the main providers of recreation and agriculture for the city.
Among the most famous historic locations in Shrewsbury is the House of General Artemas Ward. Ward was a famous military general and served as second in charge to George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The most popular present day recreation spot in Shrewsbury is Lake Quinsigamond; four miles in length this is the most frequented body of water in summer months as it is also bordered by Worcester.
Artemas Ward was a lifelong Shrewsbury resident who lived during the eighteenth century. He is best known for his role during and after the Revolutionary War where he would serve as a General and later a Congressman. Ward is remembered for his effort as the mastermind behind the success of the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Lillian Asplund was born in nearby Worcester in 1906 and lived to be ninety-nine years old. She is best known for being the oldest surviving American onboard the Titanic and being the oldest survivor with memories of the tragedy.
Gregory McDonald was born and raised in Shrewsbury, before going on to attend Harvard University. After college, McDonald would work as a teacher before landing a job as a journalist for the Boston Globe. He eventually left this job to become an author and would go on to publish twenty-five novels, most notably the Fletch, series. These novels were made into a movie starring Chevy Chase.

Resident of Shrewsbury Installs Burglar Alarm After An Increase In Traffic and Crime In The Area
The town of Shrewsbury has been one of the fastest growing communities in Central Massachusetts. Many new homes have been built in recent years, and the Route 9 commercial corridor has seen major new developments. While the growth has many positive aspects, there are other impacts as well. A home owner who lives on a connector road running off Route 9 had seen traffic steadily increase on their street. There had been some burglaries in the area as well, which prompted the homeowner to contact American Alarm to install a burglar alarm system for the home. Now the homeowner has the peace of mind of knowing that the home, and the people who live in it, are protected from intrusion at all times, day or night.
