According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Southbridge was ranked 45th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 48th in 2012. However, it was 16th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 15th in 2012.

Southbridge was first settled by Europeans in 1730, and was part of the neighboring towns Charlton, Dudley and Sturbridge, before seceding and forming the city Southbridge, in 1816. The name Southbridge comes from the two bridges located along the Quinebaug River, the southernmost bridge lies in Southbridge.
The land now known as Southbridge was first settled by Mohegan and Nipmuc tribes. The local water sources and fertile land provided great opportunity for these natives. In 1638, the natives sold a tract of land which included Southbridge to early European settlers, however, it took nearly 100 years for the settlers to move onto the land.
After settlers moved onto the land, they shared many of the same successes that the natives once had. While the original settlement was agrarian based, it soon transitioned to an industrial area. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought many manufacturing businesses and mills to the area, which were powered by the fast moving Quinebaug River. As outsiders saw the potential the city had to offer, many new immigrants came to the country and found refuge in Southbridge. With this influx of new people, Southbridge soon had new industries in town, the most notable was the optical industry. The American Optical Company came to town and became a major employer for locals. Over 6,000 people worked for the company by the mid twentieth century.
Restaurants:
Among the recreation sites in town the many recreational sites along the Quinebaug River and Westville Lake. The Quinebaug stretches nearly seventy miles and reaches into Connecticut, it also feeds twenty-three acre Westville Lake located in town. Also located along the river is a one mile long dam which helps regulate the water flow. Among the recreation in these bodies of water are biking and hiking along a tow mile loop, boating, fishing and picnicking. Another site in town that helps celebrate the towns culture and history is the Optical Heritage Museum. As a city whose industry once revolved around optical solutions, Southbridge’s Optical museum, displays many examples of their works. Among the displays are President John Quincy Adams glasses and the many other designs through the years.
William “Taz” Joel DiGregorio is best known for his longtime involvement with the Charlie Danielas Band, that spanned from the 1960’s until his death in 2011. Raised in Southbridge, DiGregorio found an interest in music at an early age. After joining the Charlie Daniels Band, he became a keyboardist and songwriter for the band, and even co-wrote the bands most famous song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
Calvin Paige was born in Southbridge and remained a lifelong resident, where he continually remained involved in the community. Born in 1848, Paige attended the local schools where he would graduate before becoming President of the Central Cotton Mills Company. In his later life he became a politician where he served as a member of the House of Representatives. In his final years he became a banker in Southbridge until his death in 1930.
William L. Marcy is best known for his involvement in politics, where he held numerous high-ranking positions. Born in Southbridge, Marcy would attend the local schools before going to Brown University, where he graduated from in 1808. He then began his career as an educator before taking on politics after the conclusion of the War of 1812. After the War, he rose from being a New York Senator, to the Governor of New York, to the Secretary of War and finally the Secretary of State under Franklin Pierce.

One of our long-standing commercial customers recently decided to consolidate its operations into one lager facility in the town of Southbridge. During the transition, our security consultant worked closely with the company leadership to design a new security and fire alarm system that would meet the needs of the larger facility, and to manage the transition from several locations to the one new site. The fire alarm was particularly important, given the nature of the company’s business and the threat of fire or explosion. Once the new system was installed, and the company began relocating from other small buildings, we monitored the transition closely, keeping its legacy security and fire systems operative until all the equipment and employees were located in the new facility.
