Sterling was first permanently settled by Europeans in 1720 as part of Lancaster. After the distance to Lancaster’s center became too great, the town Sterling was created. In 1781, Sterling was incorporated, and named after General William “Lord Stirling,” who although of Scottish descent, served as an American in the Revolutionary War.
Prior to European arrival in Sterling, the area had been settled by Nashaway natives, who had lived in the area for over 8,000 years. The wealth of local water sources and fertile land served as a great place for civilization to settle. As time went on and colonists began arriving in the area, natives began selling away their land, beginning in 1643. As the area became more thickly settled, the area seceded from Lancaster from which it was previously a part of.
After incorporating, the town was predominantly an agrarian community. The lack of fast flowing water made it so mills couldn’t utilize the water power like many other towns did at the time. Instead they began manufacturing goods that were focused around homes such as clocks, clothing, furniture and leather goods. The rise of the railroad in the nineteenth century brought new customers that were previously inaccessible, and the town saw a boom. Today, the rural town of 8,000 has minimal industry in town and mostly serves as a bedroom community.
