First settled by European colonists in 1704, it took only ten years for the town to become incorporated and was named Sutton. The name Sutton derives from the Anglo-Saxon name, which means “South Town.” Prior to the arrival of settlers, Nipmuc natives had lived in the area. During the 1600’s one of the Nipmuc natives travelled to England, and sold a large parcel of land to Edward Pratt who in turn would sell the land he acquired to residents in Massachusetts.
The early years in Sutton revolved around the produce, including the famous Sutton Beauty Apple. The emergence of agriculture in the area, opened the door to new industries, including the mills. Three large mills were built in the area, and created a new form of economy in the town. Today, the town is predominantly a rural residential town with many operating farms strewn throughout.

Sutton Resident Is Able to Enjoy Open Windows Without Alarm Interference
At American Alarm, we constantly survey the security technology landscape to make sure we can provide the right equipment and system design to meet any of our customers’ needs. For example, a residential customer of ours in the Central Massachusetts community of Sutton likes to keep their home’s windows open during much of the year, to enjoy the pleasant breezes and to feel connected to the beautiful landscape around them. They did not, however, want to compromise on the security of their home. To meet this need, our team installed specialized sensors in the window screens at the home. Using these devices, our customer can keep the windows open, without disabling their home security system.
