According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Barnstable was ranked 33rd in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 37th in 2012. However, it was 37th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 25th in 2012.

First explored in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold, it was among the first towns to be incorporated in 1639. Barnstable became a predominantly farming town, named after the town Barnstaple, England. After a large tourist population became regular during summer months, the town re-incorporated in 1989 as a city, and serves as county seat for Barnstable county.
Barnstable is best known as being a premiere American summer destination for tourists. As the largest city both in population and area, Barnstable contains numerous villages, the most notable are Hyannis, Osterville and Cotuit.
Following its inception in 1639, it became known for fishing and salt industries. As these industries grew, so did the population. By the end of the 1800’s over 800 ships were docked in the town, including steamships, which had grown in popularity at the time. As these industries took off, Barnstable was starting to become one of the most populated towns in America due the large sandy beaches that cover the area, even presidents resided in Barnstable in summer months including Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland and JFK. Tourist continue to flock to Barnstable in summer months, shopping the old-fashioned and upscale downtown stores and spending time on the beautiful beaches.
Barnstable is home to many museums, however the most well-known is the John F. Kennedy Museum. It is also home to other places on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as numerous beaches that are frequented during summer months.
Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer who wrote the novels such as Cat’s Cradle, Jailbird and Slaughterhouse Five. He also served in the military in World War II before becoming an author, an experience which had a great influence on his work. Vonnegut and his family lived in Barnstable starting in the 1950’s and lived there for over a decade, falling in love with the nearby ocean.
John “Hondo” Havlicek, was a Small Forward who played all of his 16 year NBA career with the Boston Celtics from 1962-1978. During his time on the team he played with the likes of Sam Jones and Bill Russell, and won eight championships and was an NBA All-Star 13 times. Havlicek now splits time between his houses in Weston, Barnstable and Florida.
John F. Kennedy and his family were some of the more notable summer residences in Barnstable, more specifically Hyannis port. Known as the Kennedy Compound, the family spent all summer at the house. As time went on John ran his political campaign out of the house and in 2012 it was donated by the family, for the intention to eventually be open to the public.
