According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Attleboro was ranked 55th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 57th in 2012. However, it was 92nd for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 67th in 2012.

In 1643, the area now considered Attleboro was settled and was incorporated as Rehoboth. Fifty years later it separated and was incorporated as Attleborough, named after the town of the same name in England. Upon its incorporation it included the towns, Cumberland, Rhode Island which separated in 1747, and North Attleborough which separated in 1887. In 1914, Attlebough was re-incorporated as a city, and dropped the “-ugh” in its name, thus becoming “Attleboro.”
Attleboro had a relatively peaceful inception following a few brutal skirmishes prior to its incorporation. After the first settlers came to the town, the settlement was under attack from the natives who were trying to force settlers out of the area. The settlers resisted the attack, and fought back. Once the fighting was over Attleboro gave birth to a great deal in industry and manufacturing
Throughout history, Attleboro has been best known for their jewelry industry, even dubbed the “Jewelry Capital of the World.” This industry first came to Attleboro in 1780, when a settler, referred to as “The Frenchmen” came to the town and established a metal forge, creating buttons and jewelry. Since then the industry has flourished. The nineteenth century reflected the growth of industry after textile mills and metal forges started sprouting up in the area. By the 1850’s nearly twenty-five jewelry and metal forges were operating in the town. Once the Civil War approached in 1861, Attleboro put together hundreds of soldiers to fight on the Union army, and made up portions of the 7th, 18th, 24th, 26th, 40th, 47th and 58th regiments.
After the war more jewelry manufacturers flourished in Attleboro. Companies like L.G. Balfour Company, who has since moved out, but companies such as Guyot Brothers Company, General Findings, M.S. Company, James A. Murphy Co., Garlan Chain, Leach & Garner, and Masters of Design remain today. Since 2011, downtown Attleboro has gone through a state-funded revitalization to restore the historic downtown.
Apart from the various historic sites, there are four museums in Attleboro: The Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro Area Industrial Museum, Women at Work Museum, and the Museum at the Mill. Attleboro is also home to Capron Park Zoo, and many jewelers.
Geoff Cameron is a professional soccer player who played for Attleboro High School, and later went on to play for West Virginia University and University of Rhode Island where he excelled. After being drafted in the third round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, and making the All-Star team twice in three years, he made the switch to the English Premiership League and currently plays for Stoke City.
David Daggett came from a wealthy family whose origins can be traced to England. Daggett, born and raised in Attleboro, graduated from Yale University. He went on to have a successful career in law and politics, and became a U.S. Senator, the Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut and even founded the Yale Law School.
