According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Falmouth was ranked 24th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 14th in 2012. However, it was 4th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 3rd in 2012.

Prior to colonization in America, the Wampanoag tribe lived in the area. At the time they called their settlement Suckanesset which meant “place by the sea where the black wampum is found;” wampum was used as decorations and as currency and was made from the shells of local sea creatures like clams and whelk. Years later in 1602, Bartholomew Gosnold was the first to lead an exploration to Cape Cod, although he never established a settlement. In 1660 Falmouth became settled by colonists of England, only to become incorporated as a town in 1686, and was named after Gosnold’s homeport Falmouth, England.
In May, 1602 Gosnold arrived in Falmouth with thirty-three other settlers with the intention of starting a colony. After sailing to many present day ports in New England Gosnold realized they didn’t have the tools to last a New England winter, so they returned to England.
It was first permanently settled in 1660 when fourteen families from Barnstable came to Falmouth where they would erect houses and a settlement. Isaac Robinson led the colonization, after promoting the principle of religious tolerance was rejected by residents of Barnstable. The Falmouth settlers prided themselves with acceptance of others, and therefore didn’t participate in King Philip’s War.
Falmouth’s trade became prominent through a plethora of industries including farming, salt works, whaling, shipping and breeding sheep. The sheep industry continued to rise as a new breed of sheep was introduced and by the early eighteenth century there were mills that could process wool and there were fifty sheep per square mile in Falmouth.
The nineteenth century gave birth to the beginnings to the culture of modern day Falmouth. The railroad ran from the mainland to Falmouth and some of the first summer residences were customary. Since then, Falmouth has become one of the bigger tourist destinations in the Cape, as it is one of the closer towns to the main land. Being on the Cape the biggest draw are the beaches, but there is also a big sports community in Falmouth. The Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League play here, and with notable alumni like Jacoby Ellsbury and other Red Sox prospects. Another popular even is the Falmouth Road Race, drawing over 10,000 contestants every year, it is considered one of the best non-marathon races in the country.
Falmouth is a rather large town and is home to seven historic districts; four of these are on the National Register of Historic Places. Falmouth also has ten historic locations on the National Register. Apart from historic locations, Falmouth has ten beaches which draw both residents and non-residents. Parents Magazine ranked Falmouth as the fourth best beach town in the country, and the only New England town in the top ten. The most popular beach is Old Silver Beach which is known for having the warmest water in the area.
Ben and Casey Affleck are actors who have starred in movies such as Good Will Hunting, Pearl Harbor, Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Although neither Affleck brother live in Falmouth they spent many summers there and Casey was born there.
Katharine Lee Bates was born in Falmouth in 1863. She went on to spend her entire life in Massachusetts, spending time in Falmouth and Wellesley. She is best known for writing “America the Beautiful,” and for popularizing Santa Claus’s wife, Mrs. Claus.
Jacob Sloat Fassett owned a summer home in Falmouth where he would spend some of his later years. After graduating from the University of Rochester in 1875, he went on to become a District Attorney, before becoming a member of the New York State Senate. Since his death, many things have been named after him including the SS Jacob Sloat Fassett, a town in Canada named Fasset, Quebec and Fassett’s Point in Falmouth.
