Prior to European settlements, the area was home to the Agawam people of the Algonquin tribe. In 1638, John Winthrop the Younger, son of the founder of Massachusetts Bay Colony, bought most of Essex county for a mere price of 20 pounds, the equivalent of $100. It was settled that year, and became incorporated in 1793 and named after Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
After colonist settled, the native Agawam tribe lived peacefully with the settlers. Agawam leader Masconomet even began naming native children English names, and even adopted the name John the Sagamore for himself.
At the time of the original settlement, it was part of the town Ipswich named “The Hamlet.” The first settler, Matthew Whipple set up his farm, only to have a road from Newburyport to Boston run through his land a few years later. With this road, settlers poured into the area chasing the same farm estates they left behind in England.
Since the colonial times, Hamilton has remained a small community and doesn’t have much industrialization. Instead it has focused on retaining a small town feel while excelling in academics. Boston Magazine ranked Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School twelfth in Massachusetts in 2010; Hamilton is also home to the Pingree School, a co-ed private school.
Among the historic places in Hamilton, are numerous residences and sites, however the most prominent is Sagamore hill; the location of Chief Masconomet’s burial ground. Upon his death in 1658, colonists buried Masconomet on Sagamore Hill with his rifle and his tomahawk. Hamilton is also home to Myopia Hunt Club. The Club is known for having the longest running polo field in the country and for its golf course, known to have hosted the U.S. Open, a famous golf tournament in 1898, 1901, 1905, and 1908. It is also the only course in the nation that Golf Magazine has ranked two holes in the top 100 for signature holes.
Bo Burnham is a comedian and internet sensation who was born and raised in Hamilton although attending private school in nearby Danvers, at St. John’s Prep. Burnham is a YouTube sensation who by October of 2010 had over 70 million views on his videos. Since then, Burnham has gone on to headline four standup comedy tours and star in the MTV show “Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous.”
Chief Masconomet was the Sagamore also known as chief of the Agawam tribe at the time of the Quitclaim Deed. This deed gave most of present day Essex County to English settlers. Masconomet and his tribe maintained a good relationship through his death in 1658, which was unheard of at the time.
Bob Stanley is a former lifelong Boston Red Sox pitcher. While with the franchise from 1977-1989, Stanley lived in the neighboring town Wenham. Among the accolades he has won over his career are two All-Star appearances, second in all-time saves for the Red Sox franchise and a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame since 2000.
