First settled in 1669, under the name North Taunton, because it is located north of Taunton. In 1711 it was shortened to Norton and officially incorporated.
Norton is best known for two things: Wheaton College and the Deutsche Bank Championship. Wheaton College is a small liberal arts college, frequently ranked among the top in the country; after opening in 1834, it served as an all women’s school until 1988 when it began to admit men. The Deutsche Bank Championship is hosted at local course TPC Boston. This is a stop on the PGA Tour and has been previously won by Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickleson and Vijay Singh.
One of the more recreational locations in town is Winnecunnet Pond. It is known for being one of the best and most populated locations for ice fishing, and remains a popular fishing destination through summer months as well.
Jonathan Eddy was a prominent military figure in multiple wars that helped form the nation. Born in Norton in 1726, in his early twenties he enlisted in the military and fought for the British. After the war he returned home and worked as a farmer. As the Revolutionary War approached, Eddy was vocal in his support of the Continental Army and was awarded with the rank of Colonel.
