During the colonial times, many settlers from England arrived in the harbors that are located in present day Salem and Lynn. Due to overpopulation, people from Lynn wanted to expand their settlement and move inland. This new settlement was called “Lynn Village.” Upon its incorporation in 1644, it was renamed after the town Reading, in England.
After Reading became incorporated, the population increased and in 1651 in order to maintain the growth the area along the Ipswich River was added to the town. The original town and the added land were governed by an open town meeting which continued to meet until the 1940’s. Among the things that were voted and passed in these town meetings was the funding of education, and the creation of a central meetinghouse for all its citizens; this meetinghouse is now marked by the town common.
