According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Dartmouth was ranked 35th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 27th in 2012. It was 69th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 65th in 2012.

After arriving in present day Dartmouth in 1650, European settlers purchased land from the Wampanoag natives who previously lived in the area. Fourteen years later, in 1664, the town was incorporated and named Dartmouth after the town of the same name in England.
After the settlement was purchased from the Wampanoag chiefs Massasoit and Wamsutta by the Plymouth Colony, the land was sold to a group of Quakers. The Quakers chose to move outside the colony due to the laws forced upon settlers by the Puritans.
The original settlement was predominantly an agricultural society, located on the coastline. Among the other infrastructure in town were iron forges and ship building businesses. During the time of the original growth the natives and settlers maintained a mainly civil relationship. However, as time went on, settlers took over land that was not part of the original deed, and the natives took up arms and started King Philip’s War. After the War, most of Dartmouth was destroyed. The citizens came together to rebuild the town and saw hasty growth after, which included many farms. The growth also forced towns such as Dartmouth, New Bedford and Westport to secede as it became difficult to access the services of Dartmouth.
More recently, Dartmouth has become a bedroom community. With twenty-three miles of coastline, exceptional schools and the retail stores in its downtown, Dartmouth is a bubbly town which is the fourth largest town in the state.
Among the more popular sites in Dartmouth are the beaches. Both Round Hill Beach and Demarest Lloyd Beach are located in town and provide summertime fun for people of all ages. The extensive beaches make Dartmouth especially popular in the summertime. The other heavily frequented sport is the North Dartmouth Mall. Built in 1972, the mall had seventy-two stores and also had a movie theater.
Jordan Todman was born in nearby New Bedford, before moving to Dartmouth where he would star on the football team. After high school, he went on to attend UConn to play football, where he would become the third leading rusher in school history. Todman was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. As of 2013 he plays for the Indianapolis Colts.
The couple Tea Leoni and David Duchovny had a home in Dartmouth, where they would frequent in summer months, both Tea and David are an actress and an actor respectively. Tea has is famous for both television and film, acting in TV shows such as Flying Blind and The Naked Truth, while also playing in the movies Jurassic Park III, Spanglish and Fun With Dick and Jane. Duchovny is best known for his lead roles in The X-Files and Californiacation
