Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the Harvard area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
Harvard was first settled by Europeans in 1658, as a road from Groton to Lancaster was being laid out. The growth in population was slow and it took over seventy years for the town to become incorporated. It got its name from a prominent resident who had ties to Harvard University.
When Harvard was originally settled and incorporated, it was known for being a farming community, which it would remain well into the twentieth century. It provided food and produce to many neighboring towns and the use of railroads helped maintain and build the economy with other towns. The biggest contributor to this farming industry came from the apple orchards in town. In the 1950’s there were fifty-five apple orchards in town, this made it the largest apple distribution town in Massachusetts.
Harvard’s history has been fairly quiet, however, there have been groups of people who have helped differentiate the town from others in its time. Two self-sustaining communities came to town during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Shaker and Fruitland communities mostly severed ties with the outside world during their existence, and mostly survived on their own.
Today, Harvard is a rural community located in between Boston and Worcester. The small town is known for the excellent school systems and their commitment to community.
