Hopedale was first settled in 1660 and was a part of the nearby town, Mendon. After the areas grew apart it seceded from Mendon and the town became Milford, only to again break apart from its previous town and becoming its own entity in 1886. The name Hopedale comes from resident Adin Ballou, a descendent of politician and theologian Roger Williams.
Hopedale is a town located in the south-east corner of Worcester County. It was originally settled as an agricultural and manufacturing town. The first mill in town was built by Benjamin Albee and was a grist mill. More mills followed and were built along the Mill River as it provided a solid water source of power.
During the nineteenth century, the industry was changed as Draper Corporation came to town. Brother Ebenezer and George brought the business to town and manufactured doors, window fittings and most importantly textile machinery. As World War I came, there were 400,000 power looms in the country, most of them were made by Draper Corporations, who would also sell them on an international scale. The company lasted well over 100 years and helped form Hopedale as a town and it’s economy.
Kevin Nee is best known for being a professional strength competitor. Born in Framingham, he soon moved to Hopedale, where he would attend Hopedale High School. He began competing in Teen Strongman Competitions in 2002, and found success after winning this competition. To date he has competed in five World’s Strongest Man competitions and in 2007 was raked in the top “25 Fittest Men” by Men’s Fitness magazine.
Joe Perry is best known for being the lead guitarist for the band Aerosmith. Perry was born in Lawrence but soon after his family moved to Hopedale where he was raised. After graduating from Vermont Academy he soon met Aerosmith’s future bassist Tom Hamilton, and formed the band Aerosmith. Over the course of the band’s career, they have won six American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards and four Grammy Awards.
Eben Sumner Draper was born and raised in Hopedale before going on to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After graduating from school he ran a successful Draper Corporation, which operated during the nineteenth and twentieth century’s and became the largest manufacturer of power looms in the country. He later became the forty-fourth Governor of Massachusetts.
