Hubbardston was originally settled as a part of nearby Rutland until 1767, where it was known as the “Northeast Quarter.” After becoming incorporated in 1767, it was named Hubbardston for Thomas Hubbard who served as a Speaker for The House of Representatives.
In its early years of settlement, Hubbardston was thinly spread out, with almost all of its economy centered around agriculture. As the population grew so did the industries in town. Mills, and manufacturers came into the town and provided many of the locals with jobs; the products included cabinets, chairs, and hats and other clothing. To complement the manufacturing industry, the farming industry also helped the town become more prosperous. Today Hubbardston remains a small, but growing town with a population of 4,500 people.
