Settlers first came to the area and settled in nearby Andover and Methuen, in the 1640’s. The area that now contains Lawrence remained a part of these places until 1847, when it was incorporated as a town, only to be reincorporated as a city six years later, becoming the first designed industrial city, and was named after one of the city’s founders Abbott Lawrence.
Andover and Methuen were both settled in 1642, where they would both see a large expansion in early years. After parts of Andover and Methuen were purchased by a group of industrialists, Edmund Bartlett, Thomas Hopkinson, Abbott Lawrence, John Nesmith and Daniel Saunders the city began planning for its future.
The industrialists paid $50,000 for the land along the Merrimack River and planned to use the land for manufacturing and mills. They began building the Great Stone Dam which helped control the water flow for the mills. As outsiders saw the opportunity the city provided they began flocking to the city to work in the factories and mills. This opened the doors for immigrants who came to the city, which created the nickname the “Immigrant City.” The population grew so fast that in less than 100 years, the population of the city grew to 95,000.
Today, Lawrence is still a major manufacturing city, with thirty-five of the economy centered around the manufacturing industry. Through the recent trend of renovating the city, Lawrence is once again on an upswing with focus on improving education and job creation.
