Lunenburg was first settled in 1718 and ten years later in 1728, it became incorporated and took the name Lunenburg. The name Lunenburg came as a tribute to King George II, who was also known as Duke Brunswick- Lüneburg.
After settling in 1718, Lunenburg originally contained parts of present day Fitchburg which were settled in 1730. For the next thirty-four years, Fitchburg remained a part of the town until it seceded and formed its own town. For much of the town’s history, Lunenburg was known for Whalom Park an amusement park that was located at the end of the Fitchburg & Leominster Street railroad. The park opened in 1893 and survived until 2000, when it closed due to the success of nearby Six Flags in Agawam.
Today, Lunenburg is a town of 10,000 people. Located in the middle of the bustling center of Worcester cities and towns, Lunenburg is a small suburb in a bigger community.
