According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Mendon was ranked 185th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 229th in 2012. It was 144th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 198th in 2012.

Mendon was first settled in the early 1660’s, and within ten years, in 1667, it was incorporated as Mendon. With the incorporation coming in 1667, it became only the second town in Worcester County to be incorporated, the first being Lancaster.
The area of Mendon was first settled by Nipmuc natives, who took advantage of local water sources and developed a sustainable society in the area. The Chief of the Nipmucs, named “Great John,” sold a parcel of land to the settlers which included the area that is now Mendon.
After the town was settled, much of the town’s economy was centered around the agriculture and mill industries. The original town was sixty-four square miles, and due to the sparsely populated area, the towns Bellingham, Blackstone, Hopedale, Milford, Millville, Northbridge, Upton and Uxbridge. As one of the towns located in the Blackstone River Valley, Mendon was greatly affected by the Industrial Revolution and the mill industry that it brought to town.
Since then, Mendon’s population has never become greater than 6,000, helping it maintain the close-knit community feel. The rural setting and attractions in the town make it a highly coveted locale.
Restaurants:
Among the vast array of recreation in the town, Southwick’s Zoo, Mendon Twin Drive- In and Lake Nipmuc make Mendon a popular year round town. Southwick’s Zoo is the largest zoo in the state and is home to over 100 animal species, including alligators, hippos, lions, monkeys, snakes and tigers. Another popular site is Mendon Twin Drive-In. Since 1954, the drive-in movie theater has been in operation, featuring two screens it is open from April to September. For year round activities, locals take to Lake Nipmuc. Named after the natives that inhabited the land, Lake Nipmuc provides a wealth of activities. Residents enjoy boating, fishing, jet skiing, sailing and swimming in summer months and when the snow falls, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowshoeing become popular.
The Taft family is deeply involved with American politics. Historically, as a family, have held positions such as Governor, Senator and even President. Among the family members from Mendon were Robert, Robert Jr., Lydia and Bezaleel. Due to her family’s heritage she was well respected and she became the first female in America to vote in 1756.
Benjamin Adams was born in 1764, and was later raised in Mendon. Growing up he would attend the local public schools before attending Brown University where he would graduate from in 1788. After graduating, he began a law career which resulted in a more pronounced career as a state Senator and a member of the House of Representatives.
