Although Millville was first settled in 1662 as part of Mendon, in 1845, the town Blackstone was later formed from a parcel of land from Mendon which included the area of Millville. In 1916, Millville seceded from Blackstone and became incorporated, adopting the name that stems from the widespread of mills in the town.
The area of Mendon was first settled by Nipmuc natives, who took advantage of local water sources and developed a sustainable society in the area. The Chief of the Nipmucs, named “Great John,” sold a parcel of land to the settlers which included the area that is now Millville.
This area then became part of the Blackstone River Valley, which is the oldest manufacturing area in the country. Beginning with the original grist and saw mills, the area saw early growth. Among the other mill and manufacturers in town were corn, fulling and wool mills as well as rubber and scythe manufacturers.
Since becoming incorporated as a town, Millville has remained a rural community, staying true to its historic past and with a population of just over 3,000 people.
The Blackstone River Valley heritage Corridor consists of twenty-four towns, Millville included and is best known for its industry in the development of New England. Among the twenty-four towns, there are over 10,000 historic sites. Among the sites in Millville, the Millville Lock is most famous. The Millville Lock helped with transportation along the river, by assisting the management of water levels.
