Roslindale was originally settled as Roxbury in 1630, which it would remain as for over 200 years, when it broke off from Roxbury. In 1873, it was annexed by Boston, and became known as Roslindale. The name Roslindale, came from the town Roslyn, Scotland, after one of the more respected men told members of the community it reminded him of Roslyn and with the topography resembling a dale, the two words were combined to form Roslindale.
After first settling as Roxbury, the town became known for serving as the main travel route to and from Boston and for the many wealthy citizens of Massachusetts. As the town grew in numbers, the area it covered took over larger areas and settlers began to move inland. Due to being located on the outskirts of Boston, it remained a predominantly agricultural community with very little to no industry.
During the 1800’s Roslindale grew into a streetcar suburb with the emergence of the railroad. The proximity to Boston made it a great place for commuters to settle, but Roslindale also maintained a small town feel. Roslindale is also the sight of the first major railroad disaster in America. In 1887, on a train heading in to Boston, a bridge that a train was passing over collapsed thus causing many passenger to either be killed or injured. This event has changed the way trains work and are inspected today, and while a disaster, it positively changed trains and made them safer for future generations.
Roslindale, overcame the disaster with flying colors, and even more settlers flocked to the suburb, which included immigrants from new places. Today, with a population of around 28,000, Roslindale is known for the diversity among its residents. With no ethnic communities making up a major portion of the larger community. Roslindale is also unique in that while it has a large population, there in little industry within the area.
Among the recreation areas in town, the Arnold Arboretum is the most popular. Set on nearly 300 acres, it is part of the Emerald Link, a string of parks throughout Boston. First established in 1872 by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Arboretum has grown to attract thousands of new visitors every year. With over one million specimens at the Arboretum, this is one of the premier vegetation displays in the world.
Billy West was born in Detroit, Michigan, but moved shortly after to Roslindale, where he would be raised. West is best known for his career a comedian and as a voice actor, although he got his start in radio during the 1980’s. He has played roles in many television shows and movies ranging from children’s to adult humor. Some of his more notable works have been Futurama, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Space Jam and Tom & Jerry.
Skip Lockwood played in the MLB for a total of thirteen seasons, playing Third Base for one season and Pitcher for the others. Born in Roslindale, he would attend nearby Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury where he was a star athlete, and still holds the record in the 100 Yard Dash. He was first signed out of high school by the Kansas City Athletics, now the Oakland Athletics as a Third Baseman, but after minimal success he later became a pitcher. After retiring in 1980, he became one of the top 300 saves leaders in baseball.
T. Vincent Learson was born and raised in Roslindale, and would attend high school at nearby Boston Latin school and college at nearby Harvard University where he would graduate with a degree in Mathematics. After graduating in 1935, he would join IBM later that year and spent his entire thirty-eight year career with the company and eventually became the CEO. Through his efforts in the creation of a new computer, he brought great wealth to the company and set them up for future success.
