According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Somerset was ranked 122nd in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 114th in 2012. It was 172nd for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 130th in 2012.

The land now containing Somerset was first settled by Europeans in 1677, and was part of the Shawomet Purchase. After the land was settled it became part of the town Swansea, which was incorporated that same year. After seceding from Swansea, the town became incorporated in 1790, under the name Somerset, which it took from the county of the same name in England.
After first settling as part of Swansea, the area was primarily an agrarian community, and later became the sight of the first battle of King Philip’s War. After the first native attacks, settlers had to retreat to nearby Taunton due to the certainty of war. When the settlers returned, the entirety of the town had been burned to the ground and they were forced to rebuild.
After the War, there was an emergence of many small industries throughout town, including fisheries and metal forges. The development of the town led to the secession of Somerset, and the town became a major distribution center, and by the early eighteenth century, it had become one of the major distribution centers in the country. Much of this industry either dismantled or moved to nearby Fall River who was experiencing the same growth that Somerset had previously.
Today, Somerset is best known for the power generation sites in town the Montaup Electric Company and the Brayton Point Power Plant. The town of around 18,000 people is home to excellent schools and a thriving waterfront community.
Restaurants:
Among the recreation sites in town, Pierce Beach is the most frequented by locals. The beach is open during summer months and the nearby park is also a hit with children. Another site that is frequented is the Village Waterfront Park where residents can walk along the water and launch boats into the nearby water.
Janet L. Robinson is best known for her nearly thirty year long involvement with The New York Times. Born in Fall River, she would go on to attend Salve Regina where she would graduate from in 1972, with a degree in English. Following school, she would become a teacher in Newport, Rhode Island and Somerset, before joining the Times Company in 1983. She quickly rose up the ranks and after being with the company for twenty years she was promoted to CEO a position she held from 2004 until 2011.
Jerry Remy was born in neighboring Fall River, but was raised in Somerset. In 1971 after entering the MLB Draft, Remy was drafted in the eighth round with the 129th pick overall by the California Angels. After playing with the team for three seasons, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox, the team he would finish his career with and became an All-Star with in 1978. He is currently the Color Commentator for the Red Sox, a position he has held since 2001.
Greg Gagne is a former MLB player is a current resident of Somerset, where he is a high school baseball coach for Bishop Feehan High School. Gagne grew up in Fall River before being selected to the MLB by the Minnesota Twins, the team he would spend his whole career with. Gagne was a member of two championship Twins teams, during which time he was ranked among the best defensive shortstops.
