Origin

First settled in 1645, the area now known as Stoneham was originally called “Charlestown End.” However, in 1725 it seceded from Charlestown and became Stoneham.

What Stoneham is Known for…

The earliest mention of the area that now consists of Stoneham came in 1632, when Governor John Winthrop and his peers went on a mission of exploring the nearby area, they stopped at present day Spot Pond and Bear Hill. From this original exploration and into the eighteenth century, Stoneham was mostly known as an agricultural town.

In 1725, the total population of taxable residents reached sixty-five and the grant for the town to secede was approved. As time passed, Stoneham turned from a predominantly farming community to a more industrial community. In 1806 the town center shifted and many new shops and buildings were constructed ranging from taverns to tanneries. As Stoneham’s industry continued to grow the shoe industry became the most prominent; in 1837 Stoneham produced 380,000 pairs of shoes, making it the most in the county and by 1850 over half of the factories in the town produced shoes.

Today, Stoneham mainly serves as a commuter suburb. Due to its proximity to Boston, it is an ideal town for commuters. eighty-five percent of Stoneham’s residents spend twenty-five minutes commuting for work every day.

Short List of Historic Places or Recreation Spots

Among the recreational activities that Stoneham has to offer, the Stone Zoo is the most prominent; the animals that reside here range from monkeys, to bears to jungle cats. Also located in Stoneham is part of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. During summer months people use the reservation for hiking, biking, sailing and swimming, and there are many historical landmarks in the reservation.

Famous People from Stoneham

Nancy Kerrigan was born in nearby Woburn, however, she was raised and attended Stoneham High School before enrolling and graduating from Emmanuel College. Kerrigan is best known for her career in Figure Skating, where she would compete in two Olympics, one in 1992 and the other in 1994; she won a medal in each Olympic competition.

John Geils better known as J. Geils was born in New York, but relocated to New Jersey after his birth where he would graduate from high school. After graduating Geils moved to Stoneham and attended college at Worcester Polytechnic University. It was here that the J. Geils Band was formed. Geils was the front-man of the band which has come out with fourteen albums, of which five albums have achieved gold status and one platinum.

John “Pie” McKenzie is a former NHL player who spent seven of his twenty-one professional seasons as a member of the Boston Bruins. While playing for the team, he won two Stanley Cups, one in 1970 and the other in 1972. As a player McKenzie was known for being a pesky and relentless player, and amassed 471 points over 691 career games and was an All-Star twice. McKenzie currently resides in Stoneham where he works for UMass Lowell as liaison for hockey development.
