Prior to colonists settling in Swampscott, the Naumkeag native tribe lived on the land and called it Swampscott, which meant “Land of the Red Rocks.” Colonists first settled the area in 1629 as part of Lynn, it wasn’t until 1852 that it seceded and became incorporated, maintaining the name Swampscott, given by the natives.
After being purchased as part of the Saugus Land Grant, settlers began to find permanent residence in the town. Francis Ingalls came to the town and opened the first tannery in the US. However, the most prominent industry in the town was fishing industry. At one point, one in three men were fishermen, who made up a fishing convoy that would leave the marina daily. Among the other common occupations were farmers, shoemakers and merchants.
The fishing industry grew in prominence during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and entered a global market. Ebenezer Thorndike started a dry fish business, and in 1808, Ebenezer expanded his fishing empire with the invention of lobster pots. These two elements would quickly make him one of the first millionaires in the country.
With the rise in local economy, new resorts were built in Swampscott which would attract wealthy businessmen and their families, which also sparked the rise in vacation homes in the town. After seceding from Lynn in 1852, more and more residents came to Swampscott, especially during the summer months. People like President Calvin Coolidge and John Humphrey, the first deputy Governor of the Mass Bay Colony. Today it serves mostly permanent residents, while also boasting 5 beaches.
Due to Swampscott’s land being made up of half water and half land, there are five beaches, Phillips, Eisman’s, Whales, Fisherman’s, and King’s Beach. Mary Baker Eddy also resided in Swampscott for a period of time, and her house is still standing today, located at 23 Paradise Road.
Johnny Pesky was a Boston sports legend who spent much of his later life living in Swampscott. Born in Oregon, Pesky had a knack for playing baseball and in 1942 he made his first MLB appearance for the Boston Red Sox. While only making an All-Star team once, Pesky’s contributions to the organization extended far beyond the field. He served as manager, color commentator and as a coach for the Red Sox for over sixty years.
David Lee Roth is the front man of the Rock’ n’ Roll band, Van Halen. After being born in Indiana, Roth and his moved to Swampscott in his teen years before moving to California. After moving to California, Roth along with the Van Halen brothers formed the band Van Halen which has released twelve albums four of which have gone on to become number one on the US Billboard 200.
Barry Pederson is a former NHL player who spent seven of his twelve professional years as a player for the Bruins. After being selected for two consecutive All-Star teams, Pederson had a bright career ahead of him. However, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for the great, Cam Neely. Pederson is now a member of NESN, where he works as a hockey analyst.
