The land in present day Walpole was first owned by the Neponset Indians, who through negotiations in 1636 sold the land to nearby Dedham. The land that was sold now makes up part of sixteen different towns. In 1724, the town Walpole seceded from Dedham garnering the name from Robert Walpole who served as Prime Minister of England from 1721-1742.
Throughout its history, Walpole was prominent for its saw mills located along the Neponset river. As mills were built along the Neponset River, the population increased, and more industry came to town. The growing population became frustrated with the local supervision in Dedham and in 1724, Walpole broke apart from Dedham becoming its own entity.
Like many towns in colonial times, Walpole played a big part in the Revolutionary War. Beginning with the extreme taxes imposed on the Colonies, Walpole was vocal in opposition, sending representatives to Boston to voice their displeasure. As the War commenced, Walpole sent over 150 soldiers to the Battles of Lexington and Concord followed by sending two miltia groups to Narragansett Bay to prevent British soldiers from attacking Newport Harbor.
While the War waged on Walpole continued to grow and develop. By 1860 there were nearly 2,000 residents and by 1922 there were 5,500 people. This rise in population is partly due to the continued running of mills in the town; these mills consisted of cotton, lumber and paper.
Since then Walpole mainly serves as a commuter suburb, and lies thirteen miles from Boston and twenty-three miles from providence.
