Prior to European colonists arriving in Spencer, they had previously settled and incorporated the neighboring town, Leicester. Residents from Leicester soon began settling in nearby areas and in 1721, the area that is now Spencer became permanently settled. In 1753, it became incorporated and was named Spencer, after the Governor at the time, Spencer Phips.
As residents began expanding their land area, the first resident who arrived in present day Spencer was Samuel Bemis, who to this day, still has descendants living in town. As the years went on more and more settlers made Spencer home, and by the end of the eighteenth century, Spencer had become a checkpoint along the Boston Post Road, a major delivery route that ran all across the East coast, whose framework laid out many of today’s major highways. Many famous historic figures stopped in Spencer on their journey on Boston Post Road, including George Washington and Henry Knox.
The town’s original economy was primarily agrarian based, but soon it took advantage of local water sources, such as the Seven Mile River. After the first mill was built in 1740, they began constructing many more manufacturers and mills along its shores. Some of the products that help bolster the town economy, were shoes and wire.
Today, the town is no longer centered around manufacturing, instead most residents work outside of the town. The town of 12,000 people is situated within a short distance to many major New England cities, while also providing residents with a rural, small town community.
