American Alarm’s History in Topsfield

What Topsfield is Known for…

Prior to European settlers’ arrival in the area, the land was settled by Agawam natives who thrived in the area using the fertile land and local bodies of water as food sources. As colonists came to the area in the seventeenth century, they bought land from the Agawam’s Chief Masconomet. Much of the purchased land included present day Topsfield.

Colonists first permanently settled Topsfield in 1635, and within fifteen years, the town became incorporated under the name Topsfield, which came from a place of the same name in England. The early settlement was largely agrarian based with a few mills and trade shops in town. As the nineteenth century came, new industry in town emerged such as various inns, stores and shoe manufacturers. In the 1850’s, as the railroad came to town, new routes opened Topsfield up to new towns allowing for its residents to begin commuting to work, a pattern that continues to this day. The twentieth century saw the decline in industry in town and a shift towards a more residential character. Today the town remains predominantly residential, with its rural nature and excellent school system, Topsfield remains a desirable town to live in.

Short List of Historic Places or Recreation Places

Due to the rural nature of Topsfield, most of the recreation in town revolves around the outdoors. The Topsfield Fair and the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary are among the more popular destinations in town. The Topsfield Fair started in 1818, and has remained an annual attraction for many people across New England. Among the attractions are an amusement park, animal petting zoo and show, concerts, food stands, museums, and the famous pumpkin contest. The Topsfield Fair continually draws many every year and in 2008 over 500,000 people attended. The other frequented spot in town is the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, a 2,000 acre property that is protected by the state. Many locals come here to utilize the twelve miles of trails that run throughout the land, and to look at the wildlife that it provides home to. Locals also have the ability to launch canoes into the water and paddle alongside the birds, frogs, otters and turtles.
