The area that now makes up Upton, was once home to a number of Nipmuc natives who lived throughout central Massachusetts. As European settlers came to the area, the native populations quickly declined as colonist populations increased. The area that is now Upton was first settled in 1728, and in 1735 the town was formed drawing from pieces of land from Hopkinton, Mendon, Uxbridge and Sutton.
After the town was incorporated, the first 100 years were based around the manufacturing of boots and shoes. By 1837, over twenty percent of all shoes produced in Worcester County, were made in Upton. The industry in town expanded as factories producing bonnets and hats emerged. The bonnet and hats brought many new residents to town who worked in factories and helped it to employ over 1,000 employees, making it the largest hat industry in the world.
Today, the town of around 8,000 people maintain a close-knit community, while growing in population. With much of the land in town protected, Upton is a great town with great New England tradition.
