Based in New England since 1971, we’ve worked in the West Brookfield area for decades. We know the landscape and we have good relationships with local police and fire officials. Our team of employees (200 strong and growing) live in the communities we serve, this means our customers are our neighbors.
West Brookfield was first settled by European colonists in 1660, as part of Brookfield. In 1848, nearly 200 years later, the town seceded and became West Brookfield. The name came from the geographic location of the town relative to Brookfield.
Prior to European colonists setting up a permanent settlement, Quaboag natives thrived in the area with the arable land and wealth of animals living in the region providing great food sources. The first settlement in the area was a predominantly agrarian community. The self-sustaining community quickly grew, and by the late eighteenth century the population was larger than that of Worcester. The rise in population was short lived as the town remains to this day extremely rural. The town of nearly 4,000 is home to excellent school systems and a large parcel of protected lands. Interestingly enough, the town is also the site of the publication of the Merriam-Webster dictionary as well as the first place asparagus was grown in this country.

Due to the rural nature of the town much of the towns recreation has to do with the outdoors. The most notable site in town is the Rock House Reservation. Nearly 200 acres in size, this protected land, was once home to many natives. Formed by glaciers over 10,000 years ago, these natives took refuge in these caves to avoid harsh New England winters. Today these caves and rock structures are open to the public who frequently come here to hike and explore the grounds.
Daniel Henry Chamberlain was born and raised in West Brookfield before going on to attend Yale University from where he would graduate in 1862. After graduating he would serve in the military as a lieutenant before moving to South Carolina and entering politics. His start in politics began in 1868 when he served as an Attorney General, and after climbing the ranks through the years, in 1874 he was elected and became the seventy-sixth Governor of South Carolina. In his later years he became an author and frequently wrote of his life experiences and travels.
Lucy Stone is best known for her beliefs and practices of human rights during the nineteenth century. Born and raised in West Brookfield, Stone, from an early age formed her opinion that women should have the same rights that men do and she carried these beliefs with her for the rest of her life. She became the first women to earn a college degree after graduating from Oberlin College. Throughout the rest of her life she frequently spoke and wrote about women’s suffrage until her death in 1893.
