The town of Westminster was first settled by European colonists in 1737, and just twenty years after being settled, it became incorporated and named Westminster, with its name coming from a city of the same name in England.
Like many towns in central Massachusetts, Westminster has been a rural town since its conception. Prior to settlers arriving in the area, natives lived in the area and used it’s plentiful resources as a base for their settlement. Since the town was formed, industry never became prominent in town. With Fitchburg and Leominster both neighboring the town, it serves mostly as a residential community. The town with a population of over 7,000 remains a close-knit community, with an excellent school system and rural nature it attracts new residents to town.
