Winchendon was first settled by European colonists in 1752, and shortly after in 1764, it became incorporated and was named Winchendon, garnering the name from a civil parish in England named Nether Winchendon, in the Buckinghamshire district.
Prior to European colonists settling in the area, Winchendon had a long history of native settlements, including both Pennacook and later Nipmuc natives. After the Europeans had come to the area they would quickly start forming industry in the town, including mills, tanneries and the lumbering industry which proved most profitable. The nearby Millers River not only allowed for trade with other nearby towns through its means of transportation, but it also provided an area for mills and manufacturing sites to thrive most notably shingles were mass produced.
As the Industrial Revolution came, so did the railroad. With the introduction of the railroad to town, new ways to trade goods with neighboring towns and cities emerged, causing an increase in residents and industries in Winchendon. The industry that created the most buzz at this time was the toy industry. Morton Converse, came into town and opened business, with its most popular toys being building blocks, hobby horses, Noah’s Arks and whirligigs.
Restaurants:
Among the famous sites in town, the Giant Rocking Horse named Clyde is the most notable. Built by Morton Converse, the, toy maker, this twelve foot horse was made from nine pine trees. Today, Clyde lives on the front yard of Colonial Cooperative Bank, covered by a gazebo. Another notable site in town is Otter River State Forest. Otter River State Forest is set on 12,000 acres and is made up by land from three towns, Royalston, Templeton and Winchendon. Many locals come to Otter River State Forest for the many outdoor activities it provides, including camping, cross-country skiing, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling and swimming.
Lawton Walter “Whitey” Witt is best known for his career in MLB which spanned a decade during which he played for three teams. He began his Major League career playing for the Philadelphia Athletics a team which he played his first five seasons for. He was later traded to the New York Yankees, which he played for four years achieving his greatest success individually and as part of a team when in 1922 they won a World Series. He finished his career playing for the Brooklyn Robins in 1926.
William Barrett Washburn was born and raised in Winchendon in 1820. He grew up attending private schools in central and western Massachusetts, before going on to attend Yale University where he would become a member the Skull and Bones society before graduating in 1844. After graduating, he would open a furniture company and enter politics in 1850, first serving as a Massachusetts member of the House of Representatives. His involvement in politics peaked in 1872 when he became the twenty-eighth Governor of Massachusetts.
Levi P. Morton is best known for his role as the twenty-second Vice President where he served under President Benjamin Harrison. Morton was born in 1824, in Vermont, however, his family relocated and moved to Massachusetts and settled in Winchendon. His early career consisted of working in many different industries ranging from banking, to mercantile efforts to business owning, before settling into politics, first serving a s a member of the House of Representatives for New York. He worked his way up the political ladder, he would become a Minister to France, the thirty-first Governor of New York and eventually the Vice President.
