The area that now makes up Woburn was first settled by European colonists in 1640. Within two years, the town became incorporated and garnered the name Woburn from a village of the same name located in England.
After first settling, Woburn contained much more land than it does today. The towns Burlington, Stoneham, Wilmington, and Winchester were all formed from the original town of Woburn. Originally a predominantly agricultural and farming community for much of its early existence, Woburn turned to industry as a source of income during the nineteenth century. The two major industries in town became the leather and rubber.
These industries were also helped by the arrival of the Middlesex Canal in 1803, and later the introduction of the railroad to the town, which above all brought new industries and residents to the city. By 1865, there were over twenty tanneries in the city, allowing it to become the leading leather producer in the area. Today, Woburn is a smaller city in Middlesex County, with a population around 40,000. Although Woburn has grown to include a large mix of industrial and residential areas in town, it remains a close-knit community, that continues to grow.

Among the historic sites in Woburn are two homes that were built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, that were once home to the historical figures, Loammi Baldwin and Benjamin Thompson. The Baldwin House was built in 1661, by one of Woburn’s original settlers Henry Baldwin. His great-grandson, Loammi later lived in this home during the 1800’s and renovated and expanded the size of the house. Loammi was the mastermind behind the creation of the Middlesex canal and for the discovery of the Baldwin Apple which was once New England’s most popular apple. Also in town is the birth home of the Inventor and Scientist Benjamin Thompson. Thompson is arguably best known for his work in assisting in the creation of a more efficient furnace and also giving scientists a better understanding of heat and, furthermore how to manipulate it.
