Mansfield was first settled in 1685 by Thomas Britnall near the Wading River close to what is now South Street. The town was officially incorporated in 1775 and named for William Murray, Earl of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England., a pro-colonial member of the House of Lords. However, the land was founded by Captain Miles Standish, John Brown, and others on June 19, 1640. Standish and the others came to survey a 64-square-mile track of land called the Titiquet Purchase that had been purchased by a company of men from the Massachusetts Bay Colony three years earlier.
Mansfield is largely known for being the home of the Xfinity Center concert venue (formerly Great Woods, Tweeter Center, and Comcast Center), one of the most popular in New England. The Xfinity Center is an outdoor amphitheater is located 30 miles south of Boston. It has a seating capacity of approximately 19,900 covered seats in the pavilion; 7,000 open-air seats; and general admission is on the lawn.
Originally known as Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Tweeter purchased the naming rights in 1999 and renamed the venue the Tweeter Center. After facing financial struggles, the Tweeter Home Entertainment Group opted out of its naming contract with the venue. Then Comcast purchased the naming rights in 2008, renaming the venue the Comcast Center, then changing it to the Xfinity Center.
The Xfinity Center was named the top-grossing amphitheater of the decade by Billboard magazine in 2010.
Mansfield is also known as the birthplace of Honey Dew Donuts, a regional New England chain of donut shops. Honey Dew’s motto: “Always Fresh, Always Good.”
Mansfield is also home to conservation and other protected lands including the Great Woods Conservation Area, a large collection of protected conservation parcels. The woods contain many hiking trails and an abundance of plant life and wildlife. The Corporal Robert Francis Hardy Conservation Area offers several trails, old forest roads, and paths as well as a couple small ponds where people can fish. The Sweet Pond Conservation Area is at the rear of the Little League Playing Field complex. The path that goes along the river and offers a good fishing spot that kids will enjoy.
Benjamin E. Bates – a New England industrialist and philanthropist, who was the founder of Bates College was born in Mansfield. Stove and furnace manufacturer and innovator Gordon Chilson (1804–1877) worked in Mansfield.
Joseph Henry Vernon – a Major League Baseball pitcher, was born in Mansfield on November 25, 1889. He played for the Chicago Cubs and Brooklyn Tip-Tops. Vernon died on March 13, 1955 in Philadelphia.
