According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Boxford was ranked 267th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 improving from 260th in 2012. However, it was 257th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” declining from 260th in 2012.

Boxford was part of the land deeded to John Winthrop by Masconomet, chief of the Agawam tribe. By 1639, Reverend Ezekiel Rogers of Yorkshire, England arrived in Salem with a group of pilgrims to try “an experiment in Christian living” on a tract of this land for which they paid 800 pounds. They called their settlement Rowley, but the area contained what are now the towns of Rowley, Boxford, Bradford, Groveland and Georgetown.
Gradually the settlers spread out and by 1685 about 45 families lived in Rowley Village, which is today the Town of Boxford. With the consent of the Selectmen of Rowley, Boxford, probably named after the town in England from which some of the settlers and their minister came, was officially incorporated on August 12, 1685.
The primary occupation of the early settlers was farming, however some of the townspeople were craftsmen. Today, Boxford is divided into Boxford Village (commonly called East Boxford) and West Boxford Village.
One of the first industries in town was a grist mill. The largest industry in Boxford was the match factory, which operated from 1866 to 1905. A cider mill was operated at Herrick Farm beginning before the Civil War until after the turn of the century. Thousands of gallons of cider and vinegar were shipped from Boxford to locations all over the eastern United States.
The Tyler-Wood House, also known as “Witch Hollow Farm,” was built around 1727 by Capt. John Tyler. John Tyler was the son of Moses Tyler whose sister-in-law, Rebecca Eames, was tried in Salem Witch Trials in 1693. The house, located at the intersection of Main Street and Ipswich Road, is said to be haunted.
Baldpate Pond, and the adjacent state recreation area, is popular swimming, fishing, boating, and hiking location. The pond is located two miles south of Route 133 on Baldpate Road. The town beach, Stiles Pond Beach, just off Main Street, has some of the cleanest fresh water in eastern Massachusetts.
