According to the FBI Crime Database for Massachusetts’ 279 cities and towns, Everett was ranked 59th in “Most Property Damage per 100,000” in 2013 declining from 62nd in 2012. However, it was 75th for “Most Burglaries per 100,000” improving from 61st in 2012.

Everett, which was settled in 1630, was once known as Mystic Side and South Malden. Many of the Sons of South Malden distinguished themselves in the Revolutionary War, such Capt. Benjamin Blaney, Captain Jonathan Oakes and Captain Daniel Waters.
Over the objections of the members of some of the town’s most prominent families, Everett separated from Malden in 1870, and South Malden was incorporated as the Town of Everett on March 9, 1870. In 1892, Everett changed from a town to a city. Alonzo H. Evans defeated George E. Smith on December 13, 1892, to become Everett’s first Mayor.
The city of Everett was named after Edward Everett, who served as U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, the 15th Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, and United States Secretary of State. He also served as President of Harvard University.
Everett grew as an industrial center thanks to Issac Sexton’s patented pump can company and Kyanize Paints, which would become the largest paint manufacturer in the nation by 1947.
The Leavitt Corporation, manufacturer of nuts and peanut butter, including Teddie Peanut Butter, makes its home in Everett. Formed by Michael Hintlian in 1924, the company is family-owned and operated.
The New England Chemical Company owned by Alexander Chochraine, became the largest employer in Everett. It was the largest chemical company in New England from 1892 until 1917.
Everett is the only city in the United States with a bicameral legislature, which is composed of a seven-member Board of Aldermen and an 18-member Common Council.
The city was the setting for Ben Affleck’s 2007 film “Gone Baby Gone.” Scenes for the Adam Sandler movie “That’s My Boy” and the Kevin James movie “Here Comes the Boom” were filmed in the old Everett High School.
Part of the historic Revere Beach Parkway, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, lies in Everett. It was one of the first parkways proposed by landscape architect Charles Eliot. It was built between 1896 and 1904 to provide access from interior communities to Revere Beach.
Originating as a Sunday school in 1847, the First United Parish of Everett initially called itself the Winthrop Congregational Church. Early members expected the building, completed and dedicated in 1852, to be within the Winthrop town boundary. The church now is affiliated with both the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church. The congregation still worships in the 1852 sanctuary, located on Broadway at Everett Square.
Incorporated in 1855, the Woodlawn Cemetery covers more than 130 acres in northeastern Everett. The cemetery’s historic buildings include a chapel built in 1911 and a columbarium that dates to 1940. Nearly 130,000 people are interred at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Ellen Kathleen Pompeo, an actor, was born in Everett on November 10, 1969. Now living in Los Angeles, Pompeo landed her first major role in 2005 on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, as the title character, Meredith Grey, a surgical intern.
George Keverian was born in Everett on June 3, 1931. A Democrat, Keverian served as the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1985 until 1991. While in the legislature, he advocated for greater openness in leadership, free speech and government reform. Keverian died in Everett on March 6, 2009.
John Joseph Dell Isola was born in Everett on February 12, 1912. He was an American football offensive lineman for the New York Giants of the National Football League from 1934 to 1940. Dell Isola died in New York City on October 23, 1986.
