Littleton was first settled by English settlers in 1686 and officially incorporated on November 2, 1714. The town was also the location of the sixth Praying Indian village established by John Eliot called Nashoba Plantation, on the land between Lake Nagog and Fort Pond. Originally spelled Lyttleton, legend has it that the name was changed to Littleton because of a misspelling in the area’s newspaper.
The Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC, now part of Hewlett-Packard) located in Littleton in the 1970s, making the town part of the Boston-area high-tech corridor. DEC built a very large facility on King Street near the Common, as well as offices on Porter Road and Foster Street. In 2007, IBM purchased the King Street facility from Hewlett-Packard and announced it would become its main New England location.
Because of its location between Fort Devens and Hanscom Air Force Base, Littleton became a popular location for military retirees beginning in the 1960s..

Conant’s Store on King Street at the Common was built as a cooperative by a group of townspeople around 1840. It was originally a small, two-story building with an ell to provide a store room and open horse sheds. However, by 1902 its size more than doubled. At various times it housed a post office, grocery, barber shop, department store, cobbler shop, and an automobile agency. Most often, however, it housed a general store.
Built around 1675, the Garrison House on Powers Road was a one-and-half-story garrison or block house used for protection against hostile Indians at the time of the King Philip’s War. The original well is still at this site.
The Acton-Groton Stagecoach Road crossed the Porter Road Bridge. John Porter, who fought in the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution, lived near the bridge. He joined the Minutemen at Concord on April 19, 1775, was at the Battle of Bennington, the surrender of Cornwallis and on Lafayette’s staff, advancing from ensign to major. Governor John Hancock appointed him a colonel on August 17, 1789.
Levi Leonard Conant was born in Littleton on March 3, 1857. Conant was an American mathematician specializing in trigonometry. Conant’s most significant work was his 1896 book, “The Number Concept: Its Origin and Development.” He died in Worcester on October 11, 1916.
Harrison Reed, the 9th Governor of Florida, was born in Littleton on August 26, 1813. At age 16, he was an apprentice to a printer, but health problems caused him to quit. He became a merchant in 1836 and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died in Jacksonville, Florida on May 25, 1899.
Gregory “Greg” Hawkes, keyboard player for the 1970s-1980s New Wave group, The Cars, lived in Littleton during the band’s early years before he moved to Lincoln. Hawkes was born in Fulton, Maryland on October 22, 1952.
