Origin of Malden

The Puritans settled in Malden in 1640 on land purchased from the Native American Pennacook Tribe in 1629. Located north of the Mystic River, the area was originally called “Mistick Side” and was part of Charlestown. Malden was incorporated as a separate town on May 2, 1649.

Joseph Hills, an early settler and landholder, who emigrated from Maldon, England, selected the name “Malden.” Malden was incorporated as a city on March 31, 1882. It originally included what are now the adjacent cities of Melrose (until 1850) and Everett (until 1870).

What Malden is Known for…

In 2009, Bloomberg Businessweek named Malden the “Best Place to Raise Your Kids” in Massachusetts.

In 1984, Malden became known across the country as the location of the controversial Fells Acres Day Care Center preschool trial.

At precisely 9:15 a.m. on May 17, 2004, a same-sex Malden couple was the first to marry in Massachusetts. The ceremony took place at the Cambridge City Hall. Massachusetts was the first state in the United States to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Short List of Historic Places or Recreation Spots

The elaborate mansard mansion at 339 Pleasant Street was built in 1866 by Wilbur Fisk Haven, a partner in one of Boston’s leading hardware dealerships, A.J. Wilkinson and Co. Situated in the former “Doctor’s Row” neighborhood, it became the home of Malden physicians after the death of Mrs. Fisk in 1891. It is currently an office building. The building was restored by its former owner, A.J. Martini Inc., a construction firm known for its restoration work in the Greater Boston area.

Odd Fellows Hall was built in 1907. Located at 442 Main Street, the building was designed by Louis C. Newhall specifically for the International Order of Odd Fellows. The structure is an example of 20th century formal eclectic design combining Renaissance and Classical Revival elements. The building has been restored into a professional office building. It is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Famous People from (or Who Lived in) Malden

Gary Cherone, an American rock singer and songwriter, was born in Malden on July 26, 1961. He was the lead vocalist of the Boston rock group Extreme. He was also the lead vocalist for Van Halen’s 11th album Van Halen III and the band’s subsequent tour.

Erle Stanley Gardner, an American lawyer and author, was born in Malden on July 17, 1889. Though best known for his Perry Mason series of detective stories, Gardner also wrote numerous other novels and shorter pieces, as well as a series of non-fiction books. Gardner died in Temecula, Calif. on March 11, 1970.

Władek (later Walter) “Killer” Kowalski, was a Polish-Canadian professional wrestler. He was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on October 13, 1926. Kowalski wrestled for a number of organizations during his career, including the NWA and WWF. Kowalski won numerous championships including the WWWF World Tag Team Championship. After retiring in 1977, Kowalski started a professional wrestling school in Malden. He died in Malden on August 30, 2008.
