In 1656, a number of the pioneers who lived in Sudbury petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts to create the town of Marlborough. It was first settled in 1657 by 14 men including Edmund Rice, John Ruddock and John Howe. The route west was then called The Great Trail, later known as the King’s Highway, and today it is State Route 20. Marlborough was incorporated as a town in 1660. It was incorporated as a city in 1890.
Marlborough was one of the seven “Praying Indian Towns,” converted to Christianity by the Rev. John Eliot of Roxbury. In 1674 a deed was drawn up dividing the land between the settlers and the natives.
In 1836, Samuel Boyd and his brother, Joseph, opened the first shoe manufacturing business. By 1890, Marlborough was thriving as a major shoe manufacturing center. Craftsmen produced boots for Union soldiers, as well as footwear for civilians. Marlborough was so well known for its shoes that its official seal was decorated with a factory, a shoe box, and a pair of boots when it was incorporated as a city.
The John Brown Bell is a distinguished American Civil War-era bell that is often known as the “second-most important bell in American history” after the Liberty Bell. At one time the bell was located at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. But since 1892 the John Brown Bell has resided in a special tower built for the bell on Union Common in downtown Marlborough.
The Capt. Peter Rice House on Elm Street is a historic First Period house. The oldest portion of the house, a two-room section, was built in 1688 by Peter Rice around the time he married Rebecca Howe. The house was expanded during the 18th century to its present configuration, a five-bay, 2-1/2 story saltbox with a large central chimney. The house, now the headquarters of the Marlborough Historical Society, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Established in 1864, the 15-acre Maplewood Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Pleasant Street. It is the location of a Civil War memorial.
Horatio Alger Jr., was born in Chelsea on January, 13, 1832. He was an author whose writings were characterized by the “rags-to-riches” narrative. He graduated from high school in Marlborough in 1847. Alger died in Natick on July 18, 1899.The cemetery has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004.
Roy Nutt was born in Marlborough on October 20, 1930. He was an American businessman and computer pioneer. Nutt co-founded Computer Sciences Corporation and developed Fortran. He died in Seattle on June 14, 1990.
On September 14, 1970, Michael Thomas Burns was born in Marlborough. He is a former professional American soccer player. During his playing career, he played for the Danish club Viborg FF, three MLS teams, as well as the United States national team. Presently, Michael Burns is the GM for the New England Revolution.
